Friday, October 1st - Day 1

Mud, mud, glorious mud. This described Day 1. Arriving at midday to set up camp, the die-hards braved the torrential rains and the squelching mud. Last year's site was abandoned since it was completely under water. The rains did not stop, the wind was unpleasant and the cold was biting. Very little sleep was had and many of the smaller tents leaked.

Casualty of the mud.

Andrew Donaldson's perspective on Friday:

Things didn't look promising on Day 1 as we turned up to Cataract Scout Park in the torrential rain. Setting up tents and the like wasn't something we were particularly looking forward to and when we did eventually get started we soon realised we had good reason not to look forward to it. As someone who went to Sonfest04 (aptly renamed Mudfest04), I thought I would be an old hand at this music festival in the rain business, but I'd forgotten exactly what it was like. Clothes were drenched, tents leaked, colds arrived and spirits dampened to the point that a significantly reduced number compared to previous years ventured out for the evening's festivities. Those who did venture out were treated to some good performances, especially Nathan Tasker - the highlight of the night being his second last song: a stirring rendition of God of Wonders, with which he finished his set with Your Love Changes Me.

The one difference between Stump and Sonfest was home was 14 hours away at Sonfest, and so some of us took advantage of the closeness and retired to our beds for Friday night - a definite improvement on the prospect of sleeping in an Excel, who's back seat was full of luggage. The fog was a shocker on the way home though. We weren't able to see more than 5m in front of us at any one time and we had to travel at 40km/h along the highway due to low visibility.
