Friday June 17th - Sushi Train with special guests

Our special guests for tonight were Reverend Sang Taek Lee and his wife, Eunice. We all met at the SushiRoll in Miranda (Shop1070B, above the cinemas in Westfield) at 7.30pm. Along with Sang Taek and Eunice, there was Jo and Jayson, Andy and Chris and Lyn and Tim who braved the sushi.

It was lots of fun trying to work out what was in the sushi while it rolled along on the conveyer belt. We had to work out if it was safe to try before it rolled out of reach again. There were some unusual ingredients such as eel, raw tuna, and some other things we could not identify such as the suspicious looking brown stringy things. There were also some awesome fillings such as cooked tuna, salmon roe, avocado, sour cream, sweet egg and the list goes on. We filled ourselves to bursting. Sang Taek managed to fit in noodle soup as well which was impressive.

We decided to go to Aromas afterwards for coffee and dessert. The Lees left us at that point, having to rush home in time for a phone call from Korea. While we waiting for our coffees and hot chocolates at Aromas, we shared in a devotion:

As we have seen tonight, Sushi comes in different shapes and sizes. It comes in tuna or chicken or even eel or some other substance we may not be familiar with. These differences, however, don’t de-value the sushi in any way. It is still sushi. It is still edible. We may not enjoy the taste or we may squirm at the thought of eating eel, but the creator of the sushi gives it all equal attention and equal care.

We are very much like sushi. We come in different shapes and sizes by coming from different backgrounds, different cultures, but we are all equally valued by our creator. God loves us all and he has a special place for each one of us in His Kingdom.

When we judge one another, or show prejudice, or impatience toward one another because we feel someone doesn’t fit into the shape we expect or want, we are hurting God. We are de-valuing that which he values most highly.

Therefore: Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. Romans 15:7

During the day, Lyn had also asked her non-Christian workmates to help with finding a connection between sushi and Christianity. Here are some of her favourites that they came up with:

1. Jesus turned fish into wine.
2. If you eat bad sushi you meet God

3. As sushi has crossed cultures, so too has Christianity.
4. Not many preachers are wrapped in seaweed.
5. Jesus ate fish.

Once again, thanks to all who took part, it was a wonderful night.
